Who are you?
I am a queerteological cartoonist, ordained minister in the Lutheran Church of Sweden, dog parent, wife and chip lover. Since 2010, I have been involved in EKHO, currently as secretary in EKHO Gothenburg and former chairman of the association.
Why have you written and drawn this book?
There is so much smart, creative and affirming theology around same-sex relationships and LGBTQ rights. But sometimes it's hidden in the basement of libraries or is too academically heavy, so I wanted to create something that in an accessible way addresses the questions surrounding the Bible verses that are used to exclude and discriminate LGBTQ people. So I drew a comic! With references to theologians that I read during my studies, I wanted to show exactly why the problematic Bible verses isn´t about same-sex love relationship and why it is okay to be Christian and gay.
What does it mean to you that the book is now available in English?
I'm so glad it's now in English! My starting point in my work has always been to make available theology and LGBTQ-friendly biblical interpretations, and in English the comic book becomes available to more people.
If the book can help other Christian queers feel a little more safe and confident in their faith and identity, that means everything.
Who should read it?
Anyone who is interested in Christian faith, the Bible and issues surrounding LGBTQ and same-sex relationships. In particular, I also want those who do not approve of same-sex marriage with arguments from the Bible to read it. You don't have to agree with me, but I want you to understand how it´s possible to interpret the verses LGBTQ-friendly, even if you don't do it yourself right now. Knowledge is important!
Do you have a favorite page or quote from the book?
On page 66, where I write that it is not reasonable to use Paul's defense of sexually vulnerable groups to oppress vulnerable sexual minorities.
What do you hope the book can contribute to?
A worldwide church where it becomes a little easier to be queer - that LGBTQ people in more congregations should be a natural part of the community and deepen their faith and relationship with God.
About the book
The question of whether it is okay to be gay has been discussed intensely in the church for a long time, perhaps even back when Jesus was walking around in short trousers! Johanna Wikberg lives in Gothenburg and is a theologian and ordained minister in the Church of Sweden. From 2017-2021, she was the chair of EKHO (the Swedish national organisation for Christian LGBTQ+ people), and she frequently gives lectures about queer theology and LGBTQ+ inclusion in the church.

Jag är queerteologisk serietecknare, prästvigd för Svenska kyrkan, hundägare, fru och chipsälskare. Sedan 2010 är jag engagerad i EKHO, just nu som sekreterare i EKHO Göteborg och tidigare förbundsordförande.
Varför har du skrivit och tecknat den här boken?
Det finns så mycket smart, kreativ och bejakande teologi kring samkönade relationer och hbtq-personers rättigheter. Men ibland är den gömd i källaren på bibliotek eller är för akademiskt tung, så jag ville skapa något som på ett lättillgängligt vis gör upp med bibelversfrågorna kring de bibelverser som används för att exkludera och diskriminiera hbtq-personer. Så jag ritade en serie! Med referenser till teologer som jag läst under mina studier ville jag visa exakt vad som menas med att de problematiska bibelverserna inte handlar om samkönade kärleksrelation och varför det är okej att vara kristen och gay.
Vad betyder det för dig att boken nu finns på Engelska?
Jag är så glad att den nu finns på engelska! Min utgångspunkt i arbetet har alltid varit att tillgängliggöra teologi och hbtq-vänlig bibeltolkning, och på engelska blir serieboken tillgänglig för fler.
Om boken kan bidra till att andra kristna queers känner sig lite tryggare i sin tro och identitet betyder det allt.
Vem borde läsa den?
Alla som är intresserade av kristen tro, Bibeln och frågor kring hbtq och samkönade relationer. Särskilt vill jag också att de som inte bejakar samkönade äktenskap med argument från Bibeln läser den. Man behöver inte hålla med mig men jag vill att man förstår hur man tolkar verserna hbtq-vänligt även om man själv inte gör det just nu. Kunskapen är viktig!
Har du någon favoritsida eller citat från boken?
Å sidan 66, där jag skriver att det inte är rimligt att använda Paulus försvar av sexuellt utsatta grupper för att förtrycka utsatta sexuella minoriteter.
Vad hoppas du att boken kan bidra till?
En världsvid kyrka där det blir lite lättare att vara queer - att hbtq-personer i fler församlingar ska vara en självklar del av gemenskapen och fördjupar sin tro och relation till Gud.
